Led by Michael Gold, this joint effort among five Midwestern states will create an Agroforestry Academy for professional development of natural resource professionals, extension agents, and other educators. The goal is to advance adoption of agroforestry as a cornerstone of productive land use in the Midwest. Gold’s project has been named as the 2012 Paula Ford Professional Development Program Proposal of the Year. The grant that will fund the Agroforestry Academy was awarded by the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, Professional Development Program (NCR-SARE PDP). Latest Update on Hypoxic Zone in Gulf of Mexico
July 30, 2012

Dr. Nancy Rabalais of Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, and Dr. R.Eugene Turner of Louisiana State University report that the hypoxic zone in July of 2012 is the fourth smallest since measurements began in 1985, due to drought conditions reducing the volume of water reaching the Gulf from the Mississippi River basin. The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University documented reduced nitrate outflow from tile drainage due to the use of a new conservation practice called a "saturated buffer."
